Voices From the Islands - An Anthology of Azorean Poetry

Product Description
Translated by John M. Kinsella, 2007. ISBN 0-943722-35-7
The poetry of the Azores is a varied and rich landscape of extraordinary abundance and diversity. It is a poetry replete with local or regional detail as well as universal appeal and includes not only the themes of the sea and emigration but of identity itself: “One can be born on an island in two ways: from the body of a woman or from the radiance of sensibility.” (Eduardo Bettencourt Pinto).
This anthology contains a wide range of voices, from the 19th century (Antero de Quintal), and early 20th century (Roberto de Mesquita, Vitorinao Nemésio, Armando Côrtes-Rodrigues) to the present, among them a large number of contemporary poets of both genders including: Pedro da Silveira, Eduíno de Jesus, Madalena Férin, Natália Correia, Vasco P. Costa, Emanuel Félix, Marcolino Candeias, Santos Barros, Álamo Oliveira, Urbano Bettencourt, and Judite Jorge.
The translator is Professor of Spanish and Portuguese at the National University of Ireland, Maynooth.
