Doomed Love (A Family Memoir), a translation of Amor de Perdição by Camilo Castelo Branco, is one of the classics of Portuguese literature. It is a nineteenth-century Romeo and Juliet-like love story that sets a pair of star-crossed lovers against the outmoded and misguided views of an aristocratic society in the process of being eclipsed. There is an added twist in the figure of a beautiful and strong-willed peasant girl who loves and nurtures the hero through his tragic ordeal. The novel has been made into an opera and also into film, most recently by the Portuguese director Manuel de Oliveira who has had several successful entries in the Cannes Film Festival.
The translator is Emeritus Professor of Spanish and Portuguese and of Comparative Literature at Smith College and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Portuguese and Brazilian Studies at Brown University.
