The poetry of Jorge de Sena, a Portuguese writer who lived and worked in the United States, is inextricably tied to music. He states in the first poem of Art of Music: "La Cathédrale engloutie", by Debussy, that this work of music was responsible for his decision to become a poet. Although Sena had written poems before, it was on that day in 1936, as he tells us elsewhere, that Sena (seriously) decided to commit himself to a poetical career that was to last over forty years.

Francisco Cota Fagundes is Professor of Portuguese at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
